Did you know?

A typical wind farm turbine tower is almost tall enough to let you set the time on the Peace Tower in Ottawa.

What CanWEA can do for you

Canada is on route to become one of the world’s wind energy powerhouses. At the centre of it all is CanWEA – a national, not-for-profit association that works to keep wind energy a front-of-mind issue for Canadians. Our members look to us to facilitate and promote the responsible and sustainable growth of wind energy. In turn, they’ve helped us make wind energy the fastest-growing power source in Canada.

Membership means you stay connected. CanWEA is Canada’s leading source of credible information on wind energy and its social, economic and environmental attributes. We develop policies, provide advocacy work and engage with all levels of government. We deliver initiatives in communities in an effort to educate citizens on the benefits of wind energy. And we create opportunities for new investments, new employment and a cleaner environment, all with one guiding principle: wind energy is an essential part of Canada’s energy future – and the future of generations to come.

Policy Development and Advocacy
Across Canada, electricity generated from wind is already powering over 680,000 homes – cleanly, reliably and efficiently. But even with Canada’s unparalleled wind resources, there are still ample opportunities to do more. CanWEA’s policy development and advocacy work is driven by a desire to maximize the economic, industrial and environmental benefits of wind energy in Canada.

CanWEA caucuses and committees examine policy issues, and develop and advocate for key proposals to remove barriers to wind energy development across the country. Our caucuses operate federally and in provinces across the country – our voice is your voice. It’s our job to make sure member concerns are heard and action plans are regularly put in motion.

Communications and Marketing
The benefits of clean, natural, fuel-free energy may not sound like a hard sell, but winning the favour of Canadians still requires ongoing commitment. To ensure acceptance and understanding of wind energy, CanWEA’s communications and marketing efforts are geared towards promotion, education and community building. Be it in climate change, sustainability or energy pricing, wind power makes a difference – a difference the public needs to know about.

Our communications and marketing strategies include connecting communities and industry through such tools as our website, a “Spread the Word” campaign kit, fact sheets, case studies and testimonials. We also publish WindLink, our biweekly newsletter on wind energy developments, and WindSight, our quarterly magazine on policy issues facing the industry, as well as best-practice documents and research papers – all of which our members have direct access to.

Networking: Conferences and Events
CanWEA conferences and events are designed to help CanWEA members and key stakeholders to connect and engage on issues of importance to the wind energy industry. Gathering issues and individuals from around the world, our Annual Conference and Trade Show is an unrivalled opportunity to network and remain informed. Drawing more than 1,600 attendees, 160 exhibitors and more than 100 speakers, the CanWEA 2008 “Fast Forward to Wind” conference in Vancouver continues to be Canada’s largest renewable energy event.

Throughout the year, CanWEA also hosts Wind Matters educational seminars – a series of valuable educational seminars and discussion forums on the latest opportunities and topics within the industry. Every year, we also partner with the American Wind Energy Association to organize an event on issues relevant to the North American market as a whole.

CanWEA members receive:

  • a discount on our Annual Conference and Tradeshow
  • a subscription to WindSight, our quarterly magazine
  • access to a members-only electronic listserv
  • access to a “Members Only” web site that includes reports on the work of the CanWEA Board of Directors, Committees and Provincial Caucuses, as well as a resource library, advocacy tools, and forums to discuss and contribute to the development of CanWEA policies.
  • eligibility to participate in, and contribute to, the work of Committees and Provincial Caucuses.
