CanWEA Seminar Series

Growing Wind Energy in Atlantic Canada:
Cooperative Solutions for Regional and Export Opportunities

Moncton, New Brunswick
September 22 & 23, 2010

Seminar description:

Atlantic Canada has some of the most abundant and cost-effective wind energy resources in North America. At the same time, it is neighbor to the U.S. northeast – a region with significant “green power” demands and a relatively limited wind resource. In this context, the opportunities for wind in all four Atlantic provinces are tremendous, both for satisfying domestic demand and for accessing potentially lucrative markets in the New England Power Pool and beyond.

There is a general consensus that tapping this huge potential will require a high degree of cooperation among the provinces. This cooperation would serve to reduce wind integration costs through larger balancing areas and help build “critical mass” to overcome market access barriers into the New England market. Some steps have already been taken to increase and maximize the collaboration of the provinces in the energy sector - as demonstrated by the Atlantic Energy Gateway initiative – but many challenges remain: What transmission and interconnection reinforcements are needed? What are the needs of the off takers in New England States? What are the roles of the regulators on both sides of the border?

This seminar will look at solutions to maximize the development of the wind industry in the Atlantic region as provinces seek to develop wind and reap the social, economic and environmental benefits that this development brings.
